Which DNS should you set for Minecraft on PS5, Xbox or Switch? The addresses, console by console

On PS5 and PS4, 45.55.68.52. On Xbox and Switch, 104.238.130.180. Set 8.8.8.8 as secondary DNS, restart the console, then open a partner server in Minecraft. These are BedrockConnect's addresses. Huby needs no DNS at all.

By the Huby team

If you are looking for the DNS to put in your console to join a Minecraft server, here is the answer documented by BedrockConnect, the open-source project behind this method: 45.55.68.52 on PS5 and PS4, 104.238.130.180 on Xbox and Switch, and 8.8.8.8 as secondary DNS everywhere. The exact path through each console’s settings is below, along with what this method does not do. And if you would rather not touch any setting, the last part explains Huby, which needs no DNS at all.

The short answer: the addresses per console

Console Primary DNS Secondary DNS
PS5 45.55.68.52 8.8.8.8
PS4 45.55.68.52 8.8.8.8
Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One 104.238.130.180 8.8.8.8
Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED 104.238.130.180 8.8.8.8

These are the two public instances BedrockConnect documents in its repository. Tutorials that give a single address for every console are wrong for one or the other: it is the first cause of “it doesn’t work”.

Where to set the DNS on each console

DNS is a per-Wi-Fi setting: it applies to the network you edit, and has to be redone at a friend’s or after a router change. After every change, restart the console fully: sleep mode keeps the old answers in memory.

On PS5

Settings › Network › Settings › Set Up Internet Connection › your network › Advanced Settings › DNS: switch to Manual, primary DNS 45.55.68.52, secondary 8.8.8.8. Then Restart PS5 from the power menu.

On PS4

Settings › Network › Set Up Internet Connection › your network › Custom: keep everything Automatic until the DNS screen, choose Manual, primary DNS 45.55.68.52, secondary 8.8.8.8. Then Restart PS4.

On Xbox

Settings › General › Network settings › Advanced settings › DNS settings › Manual: primary DNS 104.238.130.180, secondary 8.8.8.8. Then Restart console from the power menu.

On Switch

System Settings › Internet › Internet Settings › your network › Change Settings › DNS Settings › Manual: primary DNS 104.238.130.180, secondary 8.8.8.8, Save. Then hold the power button and choose Restart, not sleep.

Then, in Minecraft

Play › Servers, and open a compatible partner server: Lifeboat or Mineville preferably, otherwise Galaxite or Enchanted. Instead of the expected game, a BedrockConnect menu appears. Connect to a Server, your server’s address and port, and you are transferred. Avoid The Hive as an entry point: its domain is protected by DNSSEC, and the redirect is refused on some consoles.

What this DNS does, and what it does not

Minecraft on console has no “Add server” button: the Servers tab only shows Mojang’s partners. The modified DNS works around the limit by lying to the console. When the game asks for Lifeboat’s address, the DNS answers with that of an intermediate server run by BedrockConnect, which shows a menu instead. You type an address there, and that server transfers you.

It does nothing else. It does not unlock Java servers: a Java server stays out of reach from a console unless it runs Geyser, like SileneMC. It gives no access to other players’ Realms. And it does not speed up the connection: it is a plain detour.

The limits to know before changing the DNS

  • The setting affects the whole console. Store, updates, other games: everything goes through the DNS you typed. Hence 8.8.8.8 as a fallback.
  • It has to be redone on every network. At a friend’s, on holiday, after a router change: the console goes back to automatic and the menu disappears.
  • It breaks silently. Overloaded instance, game update, partner server not redirected: the menu does not appear, with no message. The seven causes are detailed in BedrockConnect not working.
  • The addresses are run by volunteers. Thousands of consoles go through two servers. When one goes down, everyone loses the menu at once.
  • Never type an unknown address. A DNS sees the name of everything your console contacts. The two addresses above are the project’s; an address found in a comment is not.

The method that needs no DNS: Huby

Huby answers the same question without touching the settings. An Xbox account, HubyOnMC, keeps a world open at all times. You add it as a friend, join its world from the Friends tab, and the same kind of server menu transfers you wherever you want. Nothing to set, nothing to redo on another Wi-Fi, and your server list is kept with your Microsoft account.

  1. If you already changed the DNS, set it back to Automatic: Huby does not need it, and neither does your console.
  2. In Minecraft: Play › Friends › Add Friend, type HubyOnMC, send. The request is accepted in under a minute.
  3. In Joinable Friends, join the Huby world. Pick your server in the list, or add your own with its address and port.

Every console has its guide in the exact order of the menus: PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch. To weigh DNS, the BedrockTogether app and Huby side by side, read Minecraft server on console: the three methods compared. And to know where to go once the menu is open, the list of servers playable on console.

Every console and the common errors, on one page: join a Minecraft server on console.

Frequently asked questions

Which secondary DNS should I use with BedrockConnect?

8.8.8.8, Google's public DNS, on every console. It is the fallback: if the BedrockConnect address stops answering, the console can still reach the store, updates and your other games. Without a secondary, an outage of the BedrockConnect instance cuts the whole console off the Internet.

Is the BedrockConnect DNS the same on PS5 and Xbox?

No. BedrockConnect documents 45.55.68.52 for PS4 and PS5, and 104.238.130.180 for Xbox and Switch. A PlayStation address typed on an Xbox gives the classic symptom: you open a partner server and the real server opens, with no menu and no message.

Is changing the console's DNS risky?

The DNS sees the name of every site and service your console contacts. BedrockConnect's two addresses belong to an open-source project known since 2019. An address found in a comment or a video does not: it can redirect anything. If you would rather change nothing, Huby goes through the Friends tab and touches no setting: add HubyOnMC as a friend, that is all.
