BedrockConnect not working: the seven causes, and the method that does without it

Check three things first: the partner server you open, the DNS address for your console, and a full restart. If all three are right, the public instance is overloaded or a Minecraft update broke it. Huby uses no DNS, so the first six causes do not apply to it.

By the Huby team

You followed a tutorial, replaced your console’s DNS, relaunched Minecraft, opened a partner server… and the real server opens, or nothing at all. No error message. That is the flaw of BedrockConnect’s DNS method: it breaks silently. Here are the seven known causes, the one that affects your console, and how to join a server without depending on a DNS.

What the DNS method really does

On PS5, PS4, Xbox and Switch, Minecraft has no “Add server” button: the Servers tab only shows Mojang’s partners. BedrockConnect works around that by lying to the console. When the game asks “where is the Lifeboat server?”, the modified DNS answers with the address of an intermediate server, which shows a menu instead of the expected game. You pick an address, and that server transfers you.

For this to work, the console must use that DNS, at the right moment, for the right domain, and the intermediate server must answer. Every link can fail.

The seven causes, from most to least common

1. You open a partner server that is not redirected

BedrockConnect’s public DNS only redirects the domains of the compatible partner servers: Lifeboat, Mineville, Galaxite, Enchanted and The Hive. The other entries in the Servers tab open the real server. If the menu does not appear, start by trying Lifeboat or Mineville.

2. The Hive and DNSSEC

The Hive protects its domain name with DNSSEC, a mechanism that checks the DNS answer has not been tampered with. As a result, on some consoles the redirect is refused for that server, and the real Hive opens. It works for some people and not for others, with no visible logic. Avoid The Hive as your entry point.

3. The wrong address for your console

Tutorials often give a single address. BedrockConnect documents two: 104.238.130.180 for Xbox and Switch, 45.55.68.52 for PS4 and PS5. As secondary, 8.8.8.8, so the rest of the console (store, updates, other games) keeps working. A PlayStation address typed on a Switch, or the reverse, gives exactly the “nothing happens” symptom.

4. The console was not restarted

After a DNS change, the console keeps the old answers in memory. Sleep mode is not enough: it takes a full restart (on Switch, hold the power button then Restart; on PS5, Restart PS5 in the power menu; on Xbox, Restart console). Then relaunch Minecraft.

5. The setting has to be redone on every network

DNS is a per-Wi-Fi setting. At a friend’s, on holiday, after a router change, the console goes back to automatic and the menu disappears. A lot of “it worked yesterday” comes from here.

6. The public instance is overloaded or down

Thousands of consoles go through a handful of addresses run by volunteers. When one is overloaded or switched off, everyone loses the menu at the same time. The project lists community-hosted instances, but they do not share saved server lists: switching instances means typing everything again.

7. A Minecraft update

Every big update can change how the game contacts partner servers. The menu disappears until BedrockConnect ships a fix, sometimes a few days later. If everything worked and nothing changed on your side, check the date of the game’s last update.

Summary per console

Console Documented primary DNS Restart Recommended entry point
PS5, PS4 45.55.68.52 Restart the console, not sleep Lifeboat or Mineville
Xbox Series, Xbox One 104.238.130.180 Restart the console Lifeboat or Mineville
Switch, Switch Lite, OLED 104.238.130.180 Power button › Restart Lifeboat or Mineville

In every case, secondary DNS 8.8.8.8, and never an address found in a comment: an unknown DNS sees everything your console does.

The method that does not depend on DNS

The seven causes have one thing in common: they come from the interception. Huby intercepts nothing. An Xbox account, HubyOnMC, keeps a world open around the clock. You add it as a friend, join its world from the Friends tab, and a server menu transfers you wherever you want. It is the official “join a friend” door, present on every console, and configured nowhere.

  1. Set your console’s DNS back to automatic.
  2. In Minecraft: Play › Friends › Add friend, type HubyOnMC, send. The request is accepted within a minute.
  3. Under Joinable friends, join the Huby world. Pick your server, or add your own with its address and port.

Next time it is Play, Friends, Huby. Each console has its guide in the exact order of the game’s menus: PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch. And to compare the three methods, DNS, app and Xbox friend, step by step: Minecraft server on console: the three methods.

Every console and the common errors, on one page: join a Minecraft server on console.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the BedrockConnect menu not appear when I open The Hive?

The Hive protects its domain with DNSSEC: on some consoles, the modified DNS is not accepted for that server. Open another partner server (Lifeboat, Mineville, Galaxite, Enchanted), or go through Huby, which depends on no DNS at all.

Which BedrockConnect DNS on PS5 and PS4?

On PlayStation, BedrockConnect documents 45.55.68.52 as primary DNS, not 104.238.130.180 as on Xbox and Switch. The secondary stays 8.8.8.8. If it still fails after a full restart, the method is the problem, not your setting.

Do I need to keep the modified DNS to use Huby?

No. Set the console's DNS back to automatic: Huby goes through the Friends tab, not through partner servers. Add HubyOnMC as a friend and join its world, that is all.
